The moment I've been waiting for/dreading...
Neil Diamond at Fenway Park
So due to my weird 'obsession with/hatred of' the man and since I have poor judgement I've decided that I'm going to liveblog the Neil Diamond concert. Unfortunately I got home a few minutes after it had started, but I'm pretty sure they're still playing the first song.
1st song being...I don't know the name of this song and I can't figure it out. Anyway, it's been going on since I got home about 10 minutes ago. Shortly after I came in he paused during the song to say Hello, which is what led me to believe it's the first song. Nothing special. No hilarious comments so far.
2nd: "Thank the Lord for the Night Time". I grudgingly enjoy this song. Actually, any Neil Diamond song I enjoy, and I'll admit that there are several, I only grudgingly enjoy. This one has a lot of echo. And he's doing a lot of talking that I can't understand. Something about "When I get down" something something something "Everybody. Uh huh." I'm tired of this already.
Oh, he's talking again, but the sound is too garbled. I can't understand him. This is so disappointing. I'm hoping he's introducing his next song by indicating that it's about his "intense hatred of immigrants." Nope...doesn't sound like it. Instead...
3rd: He's been singing for at least 30 seconds and I don't have a clue what song this is. Whatever it is, it's quiet and slow. It's occurring to me that I might not actually know as many Neil Diamond songs as I was assuming I do. I give up on this one. Moving on...
4th: Upon some allmusic.com research, I've determined that this song is "Don't Go There". I've just decided that this process will most definitely require a beer.
5th: Alright, this is getting dumb. I've got no idea on this one either. Lots of trumpets involved though.
And he's talking again, but I'm certainly not getting it. Something about "35 years ago". The crowd seems excited about this, because obviously they all remember 35 years ago.
6th song: I'm really feeling like I'm going to know this one. No words yet, though, so I'm at a loss. Okay, I think they maybe turned the volume down because I don't feel like I can hear as well as I could the first two songs. I don't know what this song is either.
Maybe I ought to give up and only mention noteworthy stuff. Don't know the 7th song. For some reason he's telling a story about being born in Brooklyn. He got very limited cheers from this Boston audience. Not surprising. Don't know the 8th song, it's slow and melancholy seeming though.
My sister suggested I try to knit some stuff really quickly and then try to sell it to the old people as they're leaving the stadium. I don't think the Doctor Who scarf I'm working on is going to cut it.
People are really psyched about this 9th song. I, of course, don't have a clue. I definitely know the 10th song, but can't name it. Man this concert is so disappointing so far. Finally, I can say with absolute certainty that the 11th song is "Kentucky Woman". Not that that's exciting in any way.
12th!: "Forever in Blue Jeans"! I'm imagining Will Ferrell singing it in a Gap ad. That's all.
13th: Good God. Here it is. And it's just as terrible as I was expecting it to be. "Sweet Caroline." I totally thought he was going to close with this. That's it. I can't take it. I'm watching the SNL sketch...Ah...Brilliant. Hmm...He just asked the crowd "Are you sure about this?" and then launched into "Sweet Caroline" again in it's entirety. Man this city is crazy. I love it, but it's crazy. Well, now the whole concert's going to go downhill from here.
The 14th song is some sort of duet. I don't think I know it. 15th song I don't know either, but it sounds like he's saying "Salsa Blue".
16th: It's that Monkees song. "I'm a Believer". I don't care if Neil Diamond wrote it. It's a Monkees song. It sounds wrong in the voice of anyone other than Davy Jones.
I feel like he's saying something about the Doobie Brothers. I could be wrong. He's talking a lot again. I really don't think he's talking to John Goodman, though. Oh, he's talking about bringing in some people. Don't know what that's about. There was definitely an "I say to myself..." followed by a lot of rhyming words in whatever he just said.
Don't know this song. What number is this? Right, 17. Don't know it. Oh, song 18 seems to have started. I'd stopped paying attention. I don't think I know it.
19th: "Cracklin' Rose". I've kind of been waiting for this one. Or possibly I've been waiting for "I can turn invisible if I really try-y hard." I'm not hearing any of that.
20th: "America" but with a lot of bells in the background and really shrieky background vocals. And no intro about his hatred of immigrants. Or comments about hating his keyboard player because he's black. Seriously, the shrieking needs to stop. This is annoying. Maybe he's been practicing with David Archuleta.
Man I'm getting tired of this. I hope this concert ends soon. Maybe I want him to play "Shilo" first though. I have weird nostalgia associations from my childhood. But this song, number 21, is...come on...I know this one...what is it?...I don't know...I think it's one that starts with Everybody. Hmm, seems like that was the last song. Presumably there'll be an encore, though.
Oh! Hooray! It sounds like that really was the end. Awesome. Well, it turns out that this whole experience was marginally less painful/insanity inducing than I expected it to be. Which made this post seem pretty pointless, I guess.
