Why can't I ever find out about the cool subcultures before they attract mainstream attention?

I was totally unfamiliar with the subculture of Steampunk until I read about it last month on io9.

Now that it's got NYT Fashion & Style section coverage, I can see that it's already too late for me to get involved without being a poser (or, in this case, poseur). Dammit. It would go so well with my loves of science fiction and time travel and random technology and knitting and English tea and corsets, not to mention my weird obsession with old maps. Perfect. This was the perfect subculture for me and I completely missed it. Again dammit!
