Pilot review: Parks & Recreation

I watched the first episode and a half of this show. I didn't love it. I liked Paul Schneider. Aziz Ansari was about as amusing as he was on Scrubs and I get the feeling he always plays the same character. Amy Poehler tends to annoy me in general. Won't be watching anymore of it unless I hear it's become amazingly hilarious.

Granddaddy issues for Faraday?

5.14 "The Variable"

I liked this episode, mainly because I would like watching Daniel Faraday eat a sandwich. Oh yeah, I also intensely disliked this episode because it appears that Daniel is now dead. This is upsetting to me. Now my entire purpose for watching the show is to see if Miles makes it out of this alive. I'm guessing no.

So, other things about this episode... Well, Desmond is alive. That's good. There was no Ben Linus. Also pleasant. There still seems to be some hope for the Sawyer/Juliet relationship. Mrs. Hawking seems to know an awful lot of things before they happen, like maybe she's been jumping around in time for a good long while now. I am interested to find out the cause of that one. The time travel stuff was making a pretty fair amount of sense to me until they got to the part about variables. How does Daniel's plan about making it so they never crash on the island in the first place deal with the grandfather paradox? If they never crashed on the island in the first place, how do they get there to prevent themselves from crashing on the island? I think this may be Terminator rules as opposed to Back to the Future rules.

Where be the goat?

4.21 "The Three Days Rule"

Um, hey show. I was just kind of wondering...wasn't this week's episode, the one that airs the last week of April and should be about the time of Ted's birthday, supposed to include a goat? I mean, not that the episode wasn't great, and all. It was. Any time Barney and Marshall are together and up to no good it's usually hilarious. This was no exception. But, you know, I was expecting a goat. And there was no goat. That's all.

Who would win in a fight between Chuck Norris and Jason Statham?

I don't know. To my knowledge, no one has done an empirical study yet. However, TWoP has nicely laid out some Jason Statham facts that make him seem like a worthy contender.

This makes me want to see all of these movies. Per imdb, Statham has been in 24 movies. I've seen 4 of them (Lock, Stock, Snatch, Italian Job, and Collateral). I'm strongly considering adding the other 20 to my Netflix queue...um, except Pink Panther. I refuse to watch that. So 19, then. Although now that I really think about this, it could become a little bit boring seeing as there appear to be approximately 3 plots in his entire oeuvre and he always plays the same character. But on the bright side, I'll never have to think of him as anyone but Turkish.

I'm suddenly inspired to develop some photoshopping skills so that I can start proposing a variety of movie remakes that he could star in. Come to think of it, I'll start now. Here's my crappy, two minute effort of Jason Statham in Casablanca:
I, of course, realize that his head is too big, but look at how menacingly he's staring down Ugarte. Seriously, there's no way Ilsa is flying away from this BMF in the end.

Okay, so I'll make a better effort next month...unless I've lost interest in this game, which I probably will have.

Where's Martha Jones when you need her?

2009 Easter Special "Planet of the Dead"

1. I was pretty much tired of this one before it even started. I mean, come on. It's basically just the Doctor and some random people fixing a broken down bus. And then there were some flying sting rays. I really only needed the two minutes of the older lady saying ominous things to the Doctor at the very end.

2. I feel like I can now say with certainty that I find nothing particularly special about Michelle Ryan.

3. I generally find it kind of annoying when the Doctor "meets his match", as it were, in the form of an attractive yet bossy, know-it-all woman. It's a bit of a habit for Ten at this point. I'm pretty sure Nine didn't spend so much of his time having unresolved sexual tension with random women wherever he went. (Although, to be fair, he had his share with random men.)

4. Constantly talking to bug people who only speak in clicks that the Doctor then has to translate: Annoying. And on a related note: Why does a ship run by creatures with fly heads have com headsets made for human ears?

5. Was the constant, over the top Doctor worship throughout the whole episode really necessary? It's like they were using people telling the Doctor how awesome he is as padding to fill up the space around the complete lack of a story.

That's all. RTD, I can only hope you haven't ruined your own legacy by running the show into the ground before you go.

Clever post name here

This is from this week's Scrubs. I'm not entirely sure why I'm still watching the show (Yes I am. It's Denise, the new intern.), but it continues to kick ass with the music.

Also, thanks to this season I'm now obsessed with the musical group Garfunkel and Oates.

And while I'm talking about music on Scrubs, I may as well include this classic:

Lost needs more daddy issues like I need another hole in the head.

5.13 "Some Like It Hoth"

I used to watch this show for Four Toes, Sawyer, Desmond, Sun, Jin, Charlie and Hurley. Now, apparently, I watch it for Miles, Juliet, Daniel...and Hurley. Considering it's a cast of a bajillion and the number of people that I care about keeps dwindling, they're going to have to work really hard to keep my interest for next season. Luckily Daniel's back. That helps.

Eh, who am I kidding? I'll watch this show to the end and I'll grumble about it the entire time. I don't know what my problem is. Most of the time I feel like I don't even really enjoy watching it, and yet I can't stop. And it's not the same as complaining about watching Heroes or Torchwood, which are obviously crap, because this show is actually pretty good.

Whatever. 19 episodes left.

Pilot non-reviews

I'm pretty sure I only watched two pilots this Winter/Spring: Dollhouse and Cupid. I've continued watching Dollhouse and I only watched that first episode of Cupid, and I was too bored to watch it again.

The list of pilots I didn't watch is much longer: Lie to Me, Castle, In the Motherhood, Kings, Better Off Ted, The Unusuals, Southland, Surviving Suburbia, Parks & Recreation, Sit Down, Shut Up (if that's started already),...I think that's all of them.

Basically I've heard that Lie to Me is good, but I'm taking that good to be the same as the way The Mentalist is "good", which is to say "the masses enjoy it". I've heard mediocre things about Castle but it's ratings seem to be plummeting into cancellation territory. I think Kings was pretty much DOA. In the Motherhood and Surviving Suburbia were apparently indescribably awful, which doesn't surprise me. So that basically leaves Better Off Ted, The Unusuals, Southland, Parks & Recreation, and Sit Down, Shut Up for me to evaluate whether or not I need to catch up on after it's been determined whether or not they're canceled.

Only 20 episodes left...

5.12 "Dead is Dead"

...and thank god for that. I just don't think I could take any more of this show. For one thing, despite the fact that Ben Linus seems to be absolutely everyone's favorite, I'm still only managing to just tolerate him. For another thing, this mystery is just wearing on me. I just don't really care anymore. And I am certainly not looking forward to 20 more episodes of John Locke's smugness. That's been grating since he started with that "knowing" bullshit halfway through the first season. I wasn't even intrigued when it was implied that Ilana and some of the other 316 passengers are related to the island and seem to be going to the four-toed statue. And up until now the mystery of that statue had been the only thing keeping me going. Although because of the hieroglyphs under the temple in this one, I'm thinking the statue was Anubis. Which I don't find even remotely exciting. As I was saying, I'm tired of this show.

I didn't even comment on last week because it was a Kate episode, and there's really nothing to be said about that. The best part of the episode was Juliet bitching out Jack for being an asshole. I really wished she'd bitch slapped him though. If ever there was a guy who could use some "what did the five fingers say to the face?".

Anyway, even though it was a Kate episode, last week was about Ben. This week was about Ben. I'm tired of Ben. Luckily next week looks like a Miles episode. That's almost as good as Sawyer. Actually better now that Sawyer's all angsty.

Practically written in stone...

I watched the first four or five episodes of Supernatural when it first aired Fall 2005. One of the episodes was about the Bloody Mary legend, but was basically a ripoff of The Ring, appearance-wise, at least. Regardless, it gave me nightmares for a couple nights. Plus I think I had too many shows going that season, so I stopped watching. And I've kind of been regretting it ever since. I've mentioned it twice in the past two years (once, twice). I actually watched the season finale last year and I can't even remember what prompted me to do so.

Anyway, for some reason an hour ago I was looking for something on hulu and it occurred to me to see if Supernatural was on it. It's not, but it redirected me to the CW. So I ended up watching last week's episode. All I've got to say is, come June when I've got time to actually start watching from the beginning, I am going to be so obsessed with this show. It's like it's been calling out to me for the past four years, like a prophecy.

Well it ain't Buffy, but it's making progress.

I'm not sure how I managed to watch 8 weeks of the show without posting about it once. But I do suddenly feel weirdly compelled to sum up my thoughts on each episode so far. Bear with me if you care:

1.01 Ghost - Eh. I wasn't overwhelmed by awesomeness. I kind of just found everyone annoying. I definitely had some Bionic Woman fear.

1.02 The Target - I enjoyed this one more. I still didn't much care for Echo, but I found Boyd more compelling, and you've got to enjoy a show where a guy gets stabbed in the neck with an arrow.

1.03 Stage Fright - I had high hopes for this one since it was written by Jed & Maurissa, but it turned out to be about a diva and a crazy fan and lots of singing. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised about the singing.

1.04 Gray Hour - This one was relatively enjoyable and probably the first instance of me actually liking Echo. Also feeling good about Topher at this point.

1.05 True Believer - Pretty weird. Enjoyable enough, but it felt really far removed from what the show is supposed to be, if that makes any sense.

1.06 Man on the Street - This one was quite cool. It was fun to see that Paul is controlled by the Dollhouse from many angles (which is made easy by the fact that HE'S A MORON!). November's trigger ("The third flower is green.") was awesome. I like Patton Oswalt, but his scenes with Paul went on for a really long time and felt kind of flat. The rest of the episode was fun though.

1.07 Echoes - Absolutely the best episode of the show so far. It was really interesting to see Victor and Sierra's short flashes of traumatic memory hinting at why they're dolls to begin with. The dude playing the bad guy was super hot and I really hope he shows up as an active again. Topher and Adelle were beyond hilarious and were definitely the best part of the episode. Seriously, this was the Joss Whedon show I was waiting for. The only issue I had is that we got to see a lot of flashbacks of Caroline's (Echo) life and it became clear that she was really freakin' annoying. It made it a little hard for me to think I want to root for her ever getting out of the Dollhouse.

1.08 Needs - This episode was interesting and also felt like a Joss show should feel. It had that pseudo misdirect where you find out at the end that piece that explains everything that you just saw happen. The idea of having some of the actives go out and work out their personal issues in their own personalities was a nice way to make it seem like the characters were growing, without having them actually gain the self awareness that will end the show. I really like the budding Victor/Sierra relationship, although I continue to intensely dislike Caroline.

So that's all. I'm looking forward to next week's episode as it was cowritten by Jane Espenson (She of "Oh my gods, it's Ellen Tigh" and countless hilarious Buffy lines). Maybe I'll do brief posts on the remaining 5 episodes of the series season. I am curious to see if they'll reveal Alpha by the end or if this is a plot that's intended to span seasons. I feel like this show is growing on me and that I could continue to enjoy it for a while, but that while isn't something I'm counting on. And that's not really something I'll be crying about. Sorry Joss.
